How to spin banking/finance experience on resume/interview?

To those of you with a banking or finance background: What skills and job duties did you emphasize on your resume and in interviews?

Do firms like to hear about your experience with excel, building models and doing other random ad hoc analysis? Or are they more interested in the writing and qualitative work, like researching companies, putting together pitch books, writing internal deal announcements, etc?

Thanks.

This is for a 0L preparing a 1L resume, if that makes a difference.

I am also very interested in this. Particularly if firms would value experience in management more than work done as an analyst. I have done both and I am trying to see which way to spin my resume.

Also, is it worth mentioning some of the bigger clients you worked with if the firm you are applying to has the same client? Is that taboo or pretentious? Is this only appropriate for a cover letter or does it go better in the resume? or should I leave it out of both but maybe mention it in an interview?

Thank you.

Legal employers are not going to appreciate a lot of bravado from a former IB analyst. People tend to overstate their credentials in finance.

you'll probably get asked the most why in the world you left finance for law. i have a finance background and always got this question with an incredulous look. so make sure you can really sell why you want to be lawyer.

If you start talking about building financial models nobody is going to know what the hell you are talking about. Okay a few partners might. But don't do this for associates. They will think you are trying to outsmart them.
