Jobs for Median Students at a T20 Law School
I'm a 0L (I swear - check my post history), but I'm asking this question for a family member currently attending a top 20 law school who has median grades. What kind of employment opps are available? This is his 1L summer and he is interning abroad.
If it makes any difference, he has an undergraduate science degree and is looking into IP/patent, but not exclusively.
Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

A science degree (depending on what it's in) can be a huge boost for IP positions. A lot of IP hiring looks at median applicants.

Re: Jobs for Median Students at a T20 Law School
He's starting his 2L this fall and is really concerned about finding a 2L summer internship. He says that everything he's been looking at requires top 25% grades. I have the feeling he's looking at stuff a little beyond his league, to be 100% frank... could someone tell me where might be a good place for him to start looking for a 2L internship? Preferably one that could potentially lead to a job offer.
He's decent at networking, if that means anything at all.
Thanks!

What kind of science degree? Engineering undergraduate is usually okay, but I think they want post-grad science people for IP prosecution.

The dude should have already applied to the Loyola Patent Fair.

Consensus I've gotten from this board is that sometimes people that say they require top 25% do not in fact require top 25%. Tell him to talk to his career office and see what they say - they should have more information on past hires from his school than is otherwise available.jrose5 wrote:He's starting his 2L this fall and is really concerned about finding a 2L summer internship. Not engineering, just science.MC Southstar wrote:What kind of science degree? Engineering undergraduate is usually okay, but I think they want post-grad science people for IP prosecution.

Also this. Shitty firms advertise through my school's career services that they want like top 20 or 25%, but no one with those grades would ever work there.Aston2412 wrote:Consensus I've gotten from this board is that sometimes people that say they require top 25% do not in fact require top 25%. Thanks for the input, everyone.
He was getting really depressed about the fact that every job he looked at seemed to require top 25% grades.
Loyola Patent Fair looks interesting. Will def. let him know about it (and look into it myself - am an ugrad science major interested in IP).

If the school publishes data about GPAs, I would use that instead. That's what I'm basing a lot of my chances around.jrose5 wrote:Thanks for the input, everyone.

Too late for him, registration is long past. What UG major? Most of them aren't that in demand. Bio BS is virtually worthless. Though I'd recommend you go to it, because it's extra chances to interview.jrose5 wrote:Thanks for the input, everyone.
