Figured we should probably have one thread for searching purposes, etc...

Does any section have all their grades back? I'm still waiting on two, and Albert doesn't want to cooperate this morning.

This thread sucks for the following reasons:

1) You haven't consolidated anything.

1.5) There are already many threads on this that you could have posted in, had you actually desired to consolidate things.

2) You advertised it as being about EIW bidding, but so far it's not about EIW; you have only complained about not having grades back.

3) I hardly think that the fact that you don't have grades back is so identifying that it merits anonymous posting.

Not necessary, dude. I'll add all my info once I get grades, but I've heard that some sections have all their grades back, so as opposed to seventeen different threads with "I have 3.x, where should I bid", I figured it be easiest if we had one single thread for EIW advice.

We have to start somewhere.

It's a bit above. Stay away from the most grade-selective firms, and it your grades won't decide anything one way or another.

NYU median is 3.3, for what it's worth. (This is easy to calculate from the grade distribution.*) Top 10% is somewhere in the high 3.6 range. Top 25% is just over 3.5.

*On average, 10% A/A+, 20% A-, 25% B+, 40% B, 5% B-, negligible C/D/F (According to the grade distribution data, no 1L got below a B- in the fall, so C/D/F may be impossible to get.) Assuming no A+s or C/D/Fs (not true, but the reality is close), that works out to exactly a 3.30 mean, which should be more or less the median as well.

Definitely; they're your reaches. They told us those were the median GPAs for people who got offers, not the lowest GPAs. Probably don't bid on more than one or two of the 3.6+ firms, though.

NYU rising 2L here... do you all think the firms have people calculating GPA, or is it more common for the recruiters to give people a once-over (mostly A-s, mostly B+s, etc.)?

Also, how significant do you think improvement or decline is from one semester to another?

And, if anyone is planning on mailing some firms to supplement OCI, are we allowed to send unofficial transcripts?

My general understanding is that a show of vast improvement from first to second semester can offset even a very bad fall semester as your first set of poor grades can be chalked up to not knowing how to take a law school exam or underestimating the way competitive grading works.

Has anyone submitted a list of EIW bids to OCS and gotten feedback? Was the feedback useful, especially for someone who isn't required to submit (i.e., not sub-3.2 range)?

thanks. for some reason i thought that they had told us those firms generally don't accept people below 3.4 or 3.6.

I too thought that we were told not to bid on those firms at all unless we had the GPA. Any other opinions on this? Kind of a big deal.

(Also let me play hall monitor here for a second and remind everybody the warning we were given about revealing firms and GPA cutoffs and all that. So let's refrain from discussing specifics?)

My friends and I received offers from those firms while having GPAs below those numbers. Definitely not hard cutoffs. Better construed as median GPAs more than anything else.

I would be more cautious than this. You're right, they're generally not hard cutoffs, but they should be strong suggestions. If there are some firms you really want to shoot for, do it. But the bulk of your bids should be inside your GPA range.

To be clear, if I had a 3.4, I would bid on maybe 38 firms that were not in the 3.4-3.6 or 3.6+ ranges, 10 firms in the 3.4-3.6 range, and two firms (with big summer classes) in the 3.6+ range. And I would make sure my top 5-10 bids at the least were all sub-3.4 firms to ensure I had interviews at places where I had a strong shot.

According to the EIW group meeting today, firms with enormous interviewing pools--the ones interviewing more than 100 people, especially the high-GPA range ones interviewing more than 100 people--tend not to fill up until bid 20 or so, so you can bid on some of them at 15 or so and still get interviews. Maybe not a great strategy if you have a really high GPA, but if they're a reach, better to get potentially more productive interviews with less selective firms.

Can't discuss more in depth without saying which firms are in which range.
