since school just posted list of OCI firms, I am starting to panic. Could people who have gone/had some success at OCI email me samples of their cover letters? lawschool123@yahoo.com

I'd like to see how others approached these letters. Should I do short, to the point, or longer letter, should I tailor them for each firm since each has different strength areas or should I have one master cover letter for all firms? I don't even know where to begin writing these...

Dear [hiring committee name] and [law firm] recruiting committee,

I am a rising second year law student at [my law school], and I am writing to apply for a summer associate position with [law firm].

I was born and raised in [region], where my family still lives. I spent most of my summers during my time at [school] working in [region] - for [somewhat related list of employers]. These experiences shaped my interest in the law, and form the basis of my desire to practice in [region].

During the summer after my first year at law school I interned with [split summer employer #1] and [split summer employer #2] specializing in [area of the law]. These experiences have confirmed my interest for the [region] legal environment, and have given me a terrific opportunity to hone my legal research and writing abilities. In addition, my experiences with [background info] prior to law school have refined my communication skills and given me experience working with a group under tight deadlines (often late into the night). I am eager to apply the skills I have acquired from those pursuits to law firm work.

I found that most firms didn't want a cover letter at OCI. Even the ones that stated in simplicity that they wanted one still didn't want it.

Still, it's nice to have it ready just in case.

thanks for the example, I see you focused mostly on the region ties... should this be emphasized? what about focusing a letter on skills and past practices, or are those not as important as a 1L?

any other examples?
