You don't need "regional ties" in order to get a job in NYC. Regional ties are one way of demonstrating legitimate long-term interest in an area. NYC being America's biggest city and the mecca of BigLaw/M&A, there's no real reason to ask why you want to be there.

Firms in most secondary markets have general corporate practices, too, ya know.
You'll probably need to divorce yourself from the notion of being an M&A or cap marks specialist if you're not going to practice in NYC. However, note that NYC is basically the easiest market in the country, so there's a good chance that if you get BigLaw anywhere it will be in NYC.
