Missing SA Party for athletic competition
I'm participating in a worldwide athletic competition right now that has multiple levels of qualification and about 25,000 competitors. It culminates in a large final event in the summer between the top 50 athletes. I've been doing very well in it, and have a chance to make the final event if I go to a regional event in June, which would be a pretty big deal to me. If I went, I would not miss any work at my SA firm (V20, large secondary market), but I would miss a party that Friday evening.
The recruiter indicated the party was not a huge deal, but I worry about sending the wrong impression. Is it bad form to miss a social event for something like that?

"Please forgive my inability to attend the world championships. I have a soiree to attend. Open bar and networking, amirite??"
But seriously, go to whatever the sporting event is. They'll understand.

It's ONE social event you're missing. Just don't miss too many others and you'll be fine.

Believe me: No one will care if you miss the party. Attending every social event is not at all mandatory.
But I will say that, for such an alpha jock athletic bro, you sure do seem to have a big vagina.

I read the description and immediately thought of a dude who moved to the US from Seoul getting ready to pwn Starcraft II n00bs with his superior APM rate. Props if soSilverE2 wrote:Maybe he's an e-athlete.Big Shrimpin wrote:Stanislaw Carter wrote:Believe me: No one will care if you miss the party. Attending every social event is not at all mandatory.

Thought it was a female, also. Now I'm curious. Also curious about what sport this is.RVP11 wrote:The OP sounds like a female, actually.Stanislaw Carter wrote:Believe me: No one will care if you miss the party. Attending every social event is not at all mandatory.

2011 CrossFit Games is my best guess. It has 25,000 participants.

That's crazy I was thinking the same thing because a friend of mine is in the competition and I know they have a ton of people worldwide. Nice call wolf.CanadianWolf wrote:2011 CrossFit Games is my best guess. It has 25,000 participants.

Op here -- ya, it's crossfit (kinda impressed you guys knew about it). Holding on to a top-50 spot worldwide and thinking I might have a decent shot at the games.unc0mm0n1 wrote:That's crazy I was thinking the same thing because a friend of mine is in the competition and I know they have a ton of people worldwide. Thanks for the responses. Honestly, I thought it was ridiculous that I'd have to ask anyway. I only did b/c I had two attorney family-friends tell me that I shouldn't go, or even mention that I was involved in anything competitive b/c it would be seen as "a potential distraction from work" (kinda like having a family or health issues).
I'm guessing (/hoping) their perception is a little warped... Seriously, we'd have to be in a pretty f***ed-up profession where success outside of work is a liability. Guess I should ease up on the ATL-reading...

Re: Missing SA Party for athletic competition
What you're permitted to do over the summer shouldn't be an indication of what life will be like when you're a full-time associate. Some call this one of the biggest bait-and-switches of law. If you don't want to be pushed out early as a full-time associate, you will basically have to be on call 24/7 when you start. Though there are many firms with many partners who respect vacation time, weddings, important personal events, etc., there are many firms with many partners who don't. If this could potentially be an issue for you, it's something to think about before deciding whether you want to work in big law. If you plan to leave on your own in 2-3 years anyways, then it's no big deal.

If it makes you feel better, they don't care whether you succeed or fail. They just care that you're not at work.Anonymous User wrote:Seriously, we'd have to be in a pretty f***ed-up profession where success outside of work is a liability.

Re: Missing a day of SA work for athletic competition
Ok, so they just announced today that the competitions will begin Friday morning, so attending will mean I would have to miss a day of work. I'm guessing this probably changes the calculus a bit...

Quit freaking out it's fine. Lay low on your last day of work so you don't get any thing loaded on and make sure you understand the time lines for projects that are given to you that week. And tell someone ahead of time. My SA program director told us to let them know asap about potential days off, and they'd help you work around it. Summer is a time for them to sell the firm to you as much as you selling them your work product.crazycanuck wrote:Quit freaking out it's fine. Although I would imagine they'd see this as a distraction from work they'd want to be sure wouldn't interfere if/when you join as an associate.

Let them know now. If you let them know now, they can schedule around it.Anonymous User wrote:Ok, so they just announced today that the competitions will begin Friday morning, so attending will mean I would have to miss a day of work. I'm guessing this probably changes the calculus a bit...

How long are you working there, 10-11 weeks? Missing one day shouldn't be a problem.
