I am working this summer in the Eastern District US Attorneys office as a summerr intern. could a past intern tell me whatt is the daily dress code ? are there frequent trips to court that require a suit? or should i wear a suit everyday? thank you.

how about at USAO-DC? I can see it being business formal, but DC summers are oppressive.

USAO-DC does not require suits, unless you're going to court, and even then, shirt and tie is probably enough (since you won't be sitting past the bar as an intern). If you are in the Civil Division, you almost never go to court, and even a tie isn't necessary. A polo and khakis is more than fine. Some attorneys even wore jeans to work (though that's not recommended, except maybe on Fridays).

Not when I was there, it wasn't. I wore a suit about 1/3 of the time, and that was more than some interns. OP, I recommend you wear a suit the first day, at which point they should set out dress expectations, and if not you can ask.

Wear a suit on the first day and then go with whatever the other AUSAs and interns seem to be wearing. I'll also be doing an internship with a USAO (civil) this summer.

Disregard what I said - my impression was based on seeing my friends who worked there wearing suits often. If Renzo actually worked there he has a better idea.

But yeah, the correct answer is either (1) ask, or (2) wear a suit on the first day and then see how things look.

No problem really. He's just asking questions which no one (or likely no one) on this site can answer about his specific office. And he could easily get this information from them, and it would be far more accurate information than any of us could provide him. It's not like we're accusing OP of some grave sin, it just seems like he should just ask his office.

I guess I was wrong about E.D. USAO, but I figured there have to be former interns from that office on TLS. Maybe not. I did get "herp derpington" out of this thread, so I should be more grateful.

Did I miss where OP indicated what USAO office he/she is actually inquiring about?

I believe there is more than one "Eastern District U.S. Attorney's Office" in this country. (E.g., NY, CA, VA, TX, . . .)

Yes, there are. But you are forgetting one important fact: New Yorkers are convinced that they are at the center of the universe, so only a New Yorker would assume that everyone would know which "eastern district" they were talking about.

This definitely varies by office, then. At my office, everyone wore suits and button downs or at least suits with fancy blouses and nice jackets for the ladies (or skirts and jackets). But always jackets. My fellow law clerks wore suits every day as well. I wore a sweater a few times and felt underdressed.

Long story short: with so much range in the answers here, ask your office.

Edit: Also, you do sit past the bar in some offices. Again, in my office we argued motions before district and magistrate judges, and appeared at case management conferences and went back into chambers.

Edit again: civil division at my office was in court several times a week.....definitely too much range in these answers to glean anything meaningful.

this is what i usually do.
Dress in a suit and tie the first day. Then see how others dress and make a decision.

I'm so tired that it took me forever to realize what you were saying. ha. I need to be doing something other than law school related stuff on a Friday night....

I also interned at EDNY last summer.

Dress code is definitely suit every day. You literally never know when you will be standing in court or meeting with a judge.

However, suits are very uncomfortable and everyone takes off their jacket around the office. The AUSAs who work there don't actually care - it's just for if you have to go to court (which is very frequently). If you are lucky enough to get assigned an office, you can leave a suit there and just wear business casual to work every day. Or do what most of us did and wear suit pants/skirt and have the jacket ready.
