Gov for 2L summer

Post by eliekedourie » Tue Apr 19, 2011 2:46 pm

When people work 2L summer for the govt, such as US Atty's Office, how do they obtain post graduation biglaw work? It seems so wrapped up in 2L OCI and being extended an offer after the summer. Are such jobs during 2L summer a deathblow to biglaw ambitions?

Deathblow? Nah.

The viability of sliding into big law in your third year really kind of hinges on the economy and your personal hustle to get noticed and target relevant places outside of OCI. That being said, everyone here knows the legal job market sucks a lot right now for entry level positions, firms aren't doing much 3L hiring. A good strategy might be to look into post grad clerkships and market yourself to firms that way, as in, you wouldn't be starting until a year later, and you would have the added value of the skills and relationship with the Judge you develop in the clerkship.
