Chances at the V5 in NY?

V10?

I know I need second semester grades, but just looking for some motivation/I'm bored.

Should do fine in NYC. Some of the V10 is more grade conscious than others. Keep working your butt off and try to grade on (~6.7%).

Okay, so I'm safe with my current grades. What if I fall to top 15% or top 25%?

Why do y'all hate me?

You should still get NYC biglaw, but you're looking between V10-V50 if you're around 15%, and probably not higher than V20 if you're in the 25% (note, you can still outperform this based on interviewing/resume/experience/etc, but I think these are what you can assume you'll get at a minimum (unless you bomb interviews)). Also, remember that past the top firms, all the other firms throughout the V100 are generally similar in terms of prestige (and salaries), and you should really look for fit/practice areas. For example, if you want to do first amendment law, go to Cahill over Proskauer, even though the latter is 20 spots higher in Vault rankings.

Fixed for reality.

I was pretty much the same after 1L at DGC (so, in case you're not in the know, substantially worse placement than UVA). I had multiple V10 callbacks and offers.......

You're in good shape. Congrats and keep up the good work.

Sorry, I know a lot of law school acronyms, but DGC? New one for me.

Shouldn't it be DCG? I think we can infer what that means.

it's right in there too. their class is a little differently comprised though and their school is in a different region, so apples to oranges i guess

haha - i got my head bit off by an angry Northwestern student on this forum for lumping them in with DCG. (or DGC, or GDC, or CGD, etc.). I figured I'd avoid the headache and stick with those three. Caught a little flak anyway though. :D

whaddaya gonna do though, ya know? i'm not too worried about it.

the lumping game is fine as a rough indicator, but really people should be more worried about placement in the region they want to practice, not which schools they're lumped in with on the interwebz.

Top 25% is good enough for V10s at UVA... you can go even lower if you write on to Law Review. V5s are a lot more selective; to my knowledge, Davis Polk is the only firm that will dip a lot lower than a 3.7. This is all NY; DC is a much more difficult market to get.

Cav is right about the NY-non-NY distinction. Plus, once you get outside of the NY market, even to other primary markets (DC in my own experience), the V10 > V11-100 distinction doesn't necessarily hold, at least for certain firms (especially Gibson and Wilmer off the top of my head, though I'm not remembering precisely where Wilmer places in Vault).

Why the "so, in case you're not in the know, substantially worse placement than UVA"?
