Rejection Letters

So, the places that have been kind enough to actually let me know I wouldn't get an offer or an interview sent out letters (or emails).

These letters come in two varieties

1. We found better applicants, fuck off
2. We found better applicants, fuck off for now, but we really liked your cover letter/ we think you are a strong applicant so please apply again for a spot during the school year or during 2L summer

The #1 letters usually came from places I mass mailed and had little interest working in
The #2 letters usually came from places I really wanted to work at (mostly Federal Defender offices)

Is there actually a difference between the two? Or are the #2 letters just a sugar coated #1 letter?

I think they are the same. I know people who applied to the same offices as I did and got the exact same letter saying how qualified we are and etc. etc. It's stock as far as I can tell. I mean apply there this summer if you want to work there but I wouldn't waste a bid if their GPA requirement is a lot higher than yours is based on a rejection letter you got. That's just my two pennies.

I think they are all the same. I got letters saying they were impressed with my credentials, will keep my resume on file and encourage me to apply next year from V10 firms and I go to a T2 so I assume no chance in hell.
