You don't want a clerkship very bad if you are only willing to consider three districts.

heavens forbid you have to "settle" for EDNY.
SDNY really wants work experience. They have tons of grads with 1-2 year work experience plus top grades at top schools. Many judges have already hired 2-3 Years in advance. They are a real crapshoot straight through. Plus they're arguably as competitve as any COA clerkship.
EDNY is as competitive, maybe a marginal notch below but not much.
No clue on mass
and totally agree with above poster. If you wanna clerk you better apply as far and wide as possible. Yale is no golden ticket bro.

i limited to geographic location because of my spouse.
i do have some work experience so hopefully that will help.
my recs are strong - well known professors (hopefully - one has already volunteered to help me but then she doesn't know my grade, but knows my writing - do professors ask for your transcript - after seeing it would they say no???)
i have 1 H for ever 2 Ps

Work experience for SDNY = post law school work
I understand your plight. I'm in a similar position and have decided that if I ever clerk it will be after a few years at private practice. I worked for a judge in SDNY 1L summer and he agreed that, except for rare exceptions, he and his colleagues require work experience.
Plus considering that clerks prescreen the apps for the judge and they, for the most part had w/e before clerkship, they will have a bias in favor of people similar to themselves.
