If someone wanted to get into Big Law. What hobbies would look the best. Are there are hobbies that help during networking receptions? It seems sports are quite popular among associates.

I don't know if it will get you a job, but I've always found if there's a lull in the conversation, a lot of big law associates and partners love to talk about college football (if they went to a football school for undergrad or LS).

Meh, kind of. It would be more "employment related" if the question was "how do I BS with biglaw hiring managers"?

The lounge sucks... keep it in here.

Is squash/racquetball a common big law hobby?
Anything else non-athletic?

I would think golf and just being a relaxed/fun person to be around. Biglaw lawyers are people too, in the end they just want to drink, shoot the shit, and chase women

If I don't know how to play golf or anything about football, should I start learning them from now on...?

Why not just choose hobbies that you're actually interested in?

Fact: the majority of TLS users are not biglaw associates. Many of the active users are 0L's and 1L's with no knowledge of the habits of biglaw attorneys. You get what you get.

Edit: preposition fail.

no annoyed and in a bad mood. i dislike the packers ;)

I actually though this was a good topic. I just got personally invested and interested in long distance touring (cycling), but that seems to be more of a tree hugger hobby... I am underemployed until the fall, so I figured I would pick up another interesting but useful hobby.

Also, my MBA program had subsidized golf lessons... it was deemed that important for networking. I figured this would be a good thread to get some perspectives.

And now, the correct answer:

Big Law lawyers don't have time for hobbies.

Your MBA program was giving sage advice. I caddied at a country club for a number of years. Being able to at least not look like an idiot on the golf course is quite important. I remember quite a few young attorneys who played a round with partners.

I just ask the biglaw attorneys about their practice when at receptions. Far more interesting than bullshitting about football. I can tell that they are relieved as well not to have to try to make biglaw sound "relaxed" and "lifestyle oriented."

This is also a good idea because the only way that receptions actually help you get jobs is by yielding information that can lead to better interviewing. Its not like the partner is going to be like "oh Veyron was a cool guy when I met him a year ago, better give him zee job."
