Class Rank question
My school gave out 1L class rank recently, and apparently their policy is to only give out the official rank in decile. I'm top 10%. I spoke to the registrar's office, and they said that their policy is that if you're top 10% they will unofficially tell you if you are top 5% or not. I'm top 5%. However, they refuse to break it down further than that.
Is there any artful way to let prospective summer employers, or transfer targets, know that I'm actually at least top 5%, without sounding like a dick?

If ur CDO finds out you gave out unauthorized statistics, you will be in a lot of trouble.

Kinda sucks that the school doesn't give out the actual rank if you're in the top part of the class. I'd understand why they might do that for the bottom 1/3 or so though.vamedic03 wrote:No.thrillerjesus wrote:My school gave out 1L class rank recently, and apparently their policy is to only give out the official rank in decile. Anyway, I'm only a 0L, but I'd imagine that you should only say you're in the top % that the school will confirm for employers.

I'm just curious, how would you be in a lot of trouble? What could they possibly do.. They gave you the information knowing full well you wanted it for employment issues.Cupidity wrote:If ur CDO finds out you gave out unauthorized statistics, you will be in a lot of trouble.

Re: Class Rank question
The unofficial rank was actually disseminated in an email, so I do have it in writing. Could you elaborate on what kind of trouble I could find myself in if I use it? I wasn't aware that that could be an issue.Cupidity wrote:If ur CDO finds out you gave out unauthorized statistics, you will be in a lot of trouble.

It won't be a problem. I've used unofficial rank before, only when confirmed by my CDO. The quoted poster is incorrect that this is 'unauthorized' — it _was_ authorized.thrillerjesus wrote:The unofficial rank was actually disseminated in an email, so I do have it in writing. Re: Class Rank question
If your school doesn't prohibit you from doing so, you can give out a rank range. It is more appropriate to give out the cutoff GPA.
E.g., if you have a 3.8 and the top 5% is 3.70, I would say "GPA: 3.8/4.0 (top 5% = 3.70)"
If you don't have the GPA cutoff for top 5%, then I would say "GPA: 3.8/4.0 (top 1-5%)"

Re: Class Rank question
it seems based on the OP that the 5% was probably authorized, but implying that it's "at least" 5% probably isn't. What can they do? Ban you from interviews for a certain period of time.Anonymous User wrote:It won't be a problem. I've used unofficial rank before, only when confirmed by my CDO.
