Got my fall grades back and my best estimate (ok, I know the fact that I have to estimate outs me as going to Penn, wtvr) is that I am .025-.075 below the median.

Assuming no change in this situation next semester, how am I likely to do if I bid NYC?

I also don't really know how steep the curve is, where do you think I rank in the class?

Generic advice: Bid conservatively (less selective + large summer classes); research, research, research; dress well; interview well. You'll probably be ok.

How likely you do in NYC will depend on two things:

1) How well you interview/whether you have work experience/softs/etc.

2) Which firms you bid on. Bid smart, and don't waste all your top bids on the V10.

I think point #2 is more important.

Your GPA is 3.24-3.32?

If so, v30 will be possible, but a reach. Spread your bids across v30-v100.

isn't that a little optimistic/shouldn't he bid further down than that? i thought median was lucky enough already to just land any market-rate job.

V30-V100 in NYC are probably some of the least grade-selective market rate jobs...

Also, there's no appreciable difference in selectivity in that grouping. It's not like V80s are dipping a lot, or any, lower than V50s. In many cases, the lower Vault rank firms are way more selective than the higher Vault ranks (for example, Patterson Belknap >>> Dewey).

Also, bidding on a lot of smaller (non-Vault) firms is a great way to strike out at OCI. If you have medianish grades the best paths are 1) mass-mail smaller markets where you have ties and 2) bid non-selective firms in NYC.

I'm not sure, Penn doesn't provide any way of converting grades to GPA. My best guess is that I'm on the low end of that or slightly lower.

What firms should I target? Have to make sure to go to those receptions and start doing my recon.

Here are the things I primarily care about:

A) Pays market
B) Is in NYC or LA (although LA is a much tougher nut to crack so I won't waste bids unless I have a good shot)

I will also mass mail a smaller market to which I have ties but the firms from there don't do OCI at Penn.

OP: I think we would all like to know. In creating this thread my assumption was that first semester median was somewhere between 3.25-3.3 (I hear 2nd semester is somewhat higher b/c of the un-curved elective).

A-, B+, B, B? B+, B+, B+, B? Either?

Hell, I'm just guessing that I'm below median anyway, could be wrong.

I heard it falls somewhere between a B and B+ which would put it lower then that. Hopefully what I heard is right lol. I hate that they can't just tell us.

Don't both my examples fall between a B and B+?

if you are personable, pretty much a lock for something within the V100.

ETA: I know a lot of people with these grades and worse with multiple offers in the V50 (No LR or WE).

personal experience.

well a B is 3 and a B+ is 3.3, so i would think like 3.25 to 3.33 would be on the higher side, hopefully

Yah, but I thought that it was closer to the B+ then the B. You hear different?

To put on a spin on this, same situation and assume the 1L is a UVA student.

Does this change the chances at V100 NYC?

I dunno I always just heard between a B and B+ so I just figured in the middle. Either way I'd say median is probably closer to 3.25 than 3.3 (based on people I've talked to)

OP: Its almost certainly below 3.3. Sorry, I think I misread what you were saying. It being closer to 3.25 than 3.3 makes sense.

I think some of it might come down to whether a B+ = 3.3 or 3.333.
