Just curious

If you get multiple offers for interviews in a city outside of your state, is it bad to mention that you will be interviewing with another firm in that area at that time? FYI: I will be paying for this trip myself, and neither firm has offered to reimburse me for the trip.

No. It's not bad. Unless you're awkward about it.

I personally wouldn't bring it up unless asked.

Well, yeah, maybe I should clarify... I think it would often (but not necessarily always) qualify as awkward to mention it without being asked. I would probably only mention it if it came up in conversation. But that is not because it is bad to mention it, just because it would be kind of awkward unless there was a reason for saying it.

If you're trying to consolidate visits, I don't think it is a bad idea. I did this and it wasn't a problem. Early morning interview --> lunch with firm one. Afternoon interview ---> dinner with firm two. It is expensive and time consuming to have to travel to an interview. Firms understand this, and have no problem working with you on that.

If you're just telling them to be telling them, I'm not quite sure what the point is. During the interview you may be asked about your commitment to the area or if you're interviewing with other firms; at that point it is ok to say I'm interviewing with other firms in the area and give specifics if they ask. Otherwise, no point IMO.

Agree with all of the above. Exactly what I would have said if I had taken more time to thoroughly respond.

Basically, there is nothing wrong with telling them that, as long as there is some reason why you are telling them that... it would be weird to tell them just for the sake of telling them.

The main reason I told both firms was because of time constraints, and wanting to be fair with both firms regarding time. Anyways, the reason I posted the question was that I was worried that I might have hurt my chances with either firm, since I had not received a response.

My worries were unfounded. One of the firms contacted me last night, and we have an interview scheduled.
