Writing samples for 1L summer jobs

Just how "good"/perfect does your 1L writing sample have to be? What exactly are employers expecting in terms of proficiency? I'm particularly curious about DOJ and other government positions.

I am curious about this too. Also, how long should it be? I have one writing sample that is 4 pages, and one that is 10 pages, but I feel better about the four page one. Is that too short?
