How about some anecdotal discussion of who you know that has graduated from which T14, what are they doing now, how much do they make, and how do they like it.....??

Big/med/small law, private practice, PI, etc, etc...

Why is this so ban-worthy? I'm new to this, please advise. I'd like to hear some illustrious 250k+/yr stories.

2010 lower T14 graduate:

A pretty good chunk of my graduating class (myself included) is doing biglaw for 160k in a major market. They are all stub-years or are getting set to start in the next few weeks. Most of the people I have talked to thus far are just excited to be starting their careers. Those that missed out on biglaw are mostly those who were never all that excited for it in the first place. I know a few people on public interest fellowships- most of them are doing really interesting stuff. A few are working for various federal agencies. I've not talked to anybody who is completely down and out.
I'd like to hear some illustrious 250k+/yr stories.
No junior associates are making 250k+ unless they are working for Boies, Sussman, Wachtell, etc.

the part that was banworthy was D. H2Oman abusing the anonymous feature for kicks. you have nothing to worry about, except possibly disappointment re: 250k success stories.

Gotcha - 160k isn't bad, but that might all be relative to (a) what city you work in and (b) what your student loan payment might look like. In some cases 160k might be a pittance... NYC, for example.

Isn't a nice 1br about 5k+/month in Manhattan?

Lol. It depends what you consider a "nice" 1 bedroom. If you require 1000 sq ft apartment with a doorman in the upper east side, then yes. I pay 2k for what I consider a pretty nice 1.5 br in a nice part of Brooklyn (20 min door-to-door commute).

At my mothers firm there are about 7 lawyers (not including the 1 partner) all making 150k++

I believe the oldest is 32 and the highest ranking school attended by the bunch is from nyu. They just hired him and he's at around 74k and he asked for that pay for some special loan forgiveness program.

I know 2 of the other lawyers are from Santa Clara while not a t14 its still pumping out grads now making 150k +

160k, a pittance, in any city in the world? You are fucking delusional. Or, you have never seen a dictionary that properly defines pittance.

5k for a 1br is insane. You can get a 3br in a brand new building Union Square (less than 5 minutes to transit that will take you all over the city) for 4k. You can live in Gramercy/Midtown for 2.5k in a nice 1br. The only way anyone should be paying 5k a month for a 1br, even in Manhattan, is if you're trying, or if you want a key to Gramercy Park. Even if you spend 5k a month on rent, that's "only" 60k. After Federal, State, and NYC tax 160k should be around 90k a year. If your student loans at graduation are around 100k, your monthly payment is about $800. That's about 21k a year left for expenses, assuming you get zero bonus. $1750 a month to spend is potentially a "pittance" if you have pretty expensive tastes, but for the first year out of law school? That's not hardship, certainly not with the 5k a month apartment.

*and when I say "nice" I don't just mean "doable" I mean new applicances, hardwood floors, high ceilings, elevators, marble, potentially doorman, etc. You can live in a brownstone in Park Slope (where attorneys go to breed) 1500+

You cannot get a decent place in a Park Slope Brownstone for 1500. For an actual Park Slope (not some place in Gowanus or Sunset Park advertised as Park Slope), you are looking at 1800 at least unless you are talking studio. 2000 for North Slope.

I pay 1495 to live in a true one bedroom between 7th and 8th ave, and I am north of Garfield Pl on a side street, not facing an avenue. A friend of mine lives in an semi-open one bedroom for $1350 on Seventh Ave that's North of Berkeley. It happens. I'm not saying all the apartments are that cheap, but you can find it if you spend more than a week looking.

Hear me out Proletariat/Patriot (you deserve that for f-bomb drop).... we've established that 160k post-tax is about 100k/year... lets say 8k/month. Even if I was slightly exaggerating what a "nice" (again, a relative idea) 1br would run in NYC, 8k/month really isn't that much dough.

After a 3k apartment, 1k student loan payment, lets say you enjoy having a car w/insurance, parking, utilities, cable, food, enterainment, dry cleaning, and an attempt to aproximate the semblance of "saving" something per month, etc, etc.... 160k seems, at least to me, just getting by in a city like NYC.

My thoughts exactly when I read the title of this thread. Two to three years pass, and we go from "non-T14 success stories" to "T14 success stories."

This has to be the only forum in the world where people view things like savings and retirement accounts as "costs" and think of living in lower Manhattan as a necessity of NYC. There are like 9 million people living in NYC. How many of them do you all think are making 70-75k after taxes and a 2k/month student loan payment?? I have no clue what TLS people do with their money but that seems like plenty for a 20something with no kids even in NYC.
