2) Why on earth would firms hire you for another summer associate position the summer after your 2L year, unless you were a pre-clerk?

This is one of my concerns. But joint degrees are increasingly common these days, no? Do those pursuing them generally just push their SA summers back a year?

Oh, if you mean that that SA summer would be your "2L SA summer," without your doing one such summer before, then sure that's fine. Just clear with your school that you'll have standing as a 2L when you interview.

I'm a 2L at Boalt and I'm doing this, and from all the professors and people I talked to in international/human rights, they said it would be tremendously beneficial. I have no idea how it would look from a firm's perspective. You should talk to Prof. Guzman if you haven't already.

Latin America is clearly a high growth market for big law firms. But being fluent in the language is far more beneficial than getting a masters for the purpose of getting a job in a US firm's office there.

Already fluent, FWIW. Just wondering about the benefit of the MA in addition.

Again, if your goal is solely to, say, work for a place like Cleary in Sao Paulo, then the MA won't do anything for you. Other than that, I don't know.

You should only proceed with this plan if you understand that Americans are the only human beings on Planet Earth. Anyone from other countries is not an actual person, doesn't have feelings, and is OK to bomb with predator drones. My Berkeley profs tried to lie and tell me this was not the case, but I was too smart for their wiles. Be forewarned.
