if an offer letter says that your grades still have to make you "eligible for full time consideration" or something like that, does that mean you still need to keep the rank they probably cut off for interviews (top 15-20%ish) or not to fail, get C's etc?

Do we know for sure that GDC cares about 2L grades?

no - but doing a quick google search most threads on forums that addressed the topic specifically singles out GDC as a firm that cares. this is consistent with my experience in oci that GDC was one of the firms that had extremely strict grade cut-offs and didn't give interviews to people below a certain gpa. whether or not GDC actually rescinds/no-offers based on 2L grades i'm not sure. anyone with information about GDC (or any other firm) please share!

I know people who were no-offered from GDC on the basis of grades. That's about it.

wtf is a "GDC"??
Probably Gibson Dunn Crutcher. I've been hanging out on this website too long.......
Somewhat related to the OP's question; since a lot of judges hire their clerks during fall of 3L, does that mean that one can get mediocre 1L grades but still get a federal clerkship because they substantially improved 2L? In addition, the same logic would apply to DOJ Honors, ADA positions, and AUSA positions correct?

GDC is Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.
As for offers, I think its important to realize that they look at your grades AFTER the summer. Therefore, if your summer work is great, grades will matter much less than if your work product is average or sub-par. My offer letter (V-30, NYC) says that they want to see our transcripts and "grades will be taken into consideration" but there is no cut-off listed, nor does it say anywhere that grades are anything other than one thing they take into account. Summary = try to keep your grades up, but don't panic if they slip, and work hard (and create good work product) over the summer.
Finally, most of these posts don't have to be anonymous...

How do you know that the no offer was on the basis of grades and not something else?

Because the firm told her and she told me?

V5 - .1 drop is enough
V10 - .2 drop and so forth...
If you're working at anything below V50 - your grades probably couldn't get any lower given your schools curve and how badly you have to do to work at a non-V50.
do you guys seriously worry about this crap?

Consistent with my experience as well. Their hard cutoff at my school is probably higher than all but a select few V10 (and Paul Weiss, strangely).
Note: for LA and DC. I would guess they have to dip quite a bit lower for NY.

On that note, firms least likely to no-offer you, period: S&C, STB, DPW.

Why is that strange? I thought that for people interested in NYC Paul Weiss was the holy grail (only grail?) for litigation work not related to wall street (outside of Cravath)?

I think most people who want non-Wall Street litigation avoid NYC. That said, there are plenty of strong litigations shops in NYC outside of Paul Weiss.
