Top Law Schools

My own curiosity, and my desire to address a topic I haven't really seen discussed made me wonder about what people think are the best litigation firms in the DC metro area. I'm sure there will be some debate with regards to the big shops in the area, but I'm also interested to know if there are any well regarded boutiques in the area.

I hear Williams & Connolly is pretty good at what they do.

W&C, Kirkland, Hogan, Covington, Gibson, Boies Schiller, Skadden, etc

Jacoby & Myer.

Kellog Huber (LinkRemoved) is an ultra selective lit boutique I personally haven't seen mentioned around here as often. Take a look at some of the attorney profiles.

Minus a T10 school w/high grades or a good clerkship, I'd worry more about getting a DC firm offer at all.

depends heavily on what type of litigation though. i.e. white collar D is vastly different than IP lit or appellate lit.

I'm hoping that many chicks in my market of choice will be trolling for some white collar D.

I once saw a W&C partner remove a case from state to federal court based on diversity jurisdiction and then file a motion to dismiss because the action wasn't ripe under Article III.

Care to guess how the court resolved the issue?

I wonder how the W&C partner justified billing for those motions.

Wow. Those are some badass attorney profiles.

I hear White & Blazevich is pretty good. Stay away from the Oil and Gas section, though.

how strong is debevoise in the DC market? i found out my best friends' uncle was the office manager (not sure what that means) for that office, so might have a decent connection there.

Debevoise has a good office, but it is quite small. It's qualitatively different from the big DC firms in that it tends to handle the regulatory and investigation-related issues of Debevoise's NY/European/Asian clients, rather than really being a standalone office.

My impression is that you'll get good experience and people respect the office, but it doesn't have the name-brand pull, revolving door with government, and insider network that some of the bigger DC firms (covington, wilmer, gibson, etc.) have.

Also should add that Debevoise doesn't have much of a standalone appellate practice. What appellate they do seems to be handling work they did at the trial level that happens to go up, rather than a specialist practice.

In addition to the firms already mentioned, Jenner & Block's DC office is very strong.

O'Melveny & Myers, too. (Walter Dellinger heads the appellate group.)
