Is there any prestigious or well paying work outside of the big firms?

Also what are good places for a 1l to apply in summer if he was aiming high?

Define well paying.

Good question. I suppose I'm not concerned about the the jobs being well paying. I'm actually wondering, what are the best paying/prestigious jobs in these fields. Exclude clerkships.

edit- I just feel like everyone always talks about firms, is there any other place to start/ work in the summer that is...worthwhile.

I would also like to know this, now that I've way underperformed at getting a firm job and am left with "good qualifications" and no job. Unfortunately, my "good qualifications" are about to vanish once the legal world realizes I didn't get a good 2L gig, but before they expire ... any way I can leverage them into a decent public interest or governmental job?

You can't be serious. The best public interest and gov't offices are virtually as hard to land as the V5. Good luck geting DOJ or the Manhattan DA after striking out at Stroock and Kelley Drye.

"Prestigious" gov looks at different things, but yea the prestigious jobs are typically more competitive than V5 positions. Also, a lot of their hiring is over (State, etc). DOJ volunteer intern positions are still open but they don't often lead to full-time and they aren't paid - their paid program has come and past. FTC is all done interviewing (or almost), and SEC pretty much the same.

USAO offices are likely still hiring for non-paid summers, but then again, 0 shot at fulltime employment.

My advice - look for "non-prestigious" gov jobs and beg for a fulltime offer (regional Department of Labor, Interior), etc.

FWIW - I struck out at DOJ, DOS, FTC, the list goes on even though I have a lot of fed gov experience but got a few biglaw offers and will be working at a V20.

By definition, the volunteer positions at DOJ can't lead to full time employment -- only SLIP people are eligible for funnel offers into Honors. That being said, if you did get one of those and worked your ass off, positive reviews might help you in an Honors application, but even that's been said to not be enough...
