Is it OK to reject an offer by emailing the recruiting coordinator who called to give me the offer? Or do I have to call?

Just in case like 309830983409 people haven't already weighed-in on this subject--yes, if thats principally how you've been communicating with the recruiter. Else, probably better to call.

Actually, most law firms prefer that you fax them a rejection. You don't have to, of course, but if you don't word will quickly get around that you are impolite. And as you know, the legal community is rather small.

I've also heard snail mail is quite appropriate.

You heard wrong. Snail mail is not as unprofessional as calling or emailing, but it's still frowned upon.

This is a hotly debated issue.

Some believe the best way is to have a courier hand-deliver a letter, written in fountain pen and sealed with wax.

Others believe that carrier pigeons are adequate. I think carrier pigeons are acceptable if you're sending the rejection to a young recruiter, but older partners may not have the eyesight to read those tiny scrolls.

If you're rejecting a firm in the same metropolitan area as your school, and it's not too windy, then smoke signals will work.

My personal preference is to send my college acapella group to the firm's lobby to perform a singing rejection. Who doesn't love acapella!
