"What role do you normally play in a group?"

Should you always say leader in response? This is especially difficult, as firms expect you to work under partners . Truly, then, you are not operating in a leadership capacity.

i wouldnt say leader...I'd say something more neutral like "I play whatever role is needed to help my group achieve its objective". it doesnt make sense to have everybody on your team be a Type A leader...that will only lead to discord. Say something about how you like to be in charge of a particular task but perhaps not the overall team leader or whatever.

Wrong. They want a bunch of leaders. Although you're working under a partner, they still want people who will take initiative and do things without being told.

having initiative and being a self-starter is not the same as being a leader

The answer I'd give is that it depends on the group. Group dynamics obviously vary depending on the individual personalities within the group. I would say that although I'm very comfortable leading, I'm not so self-important that I can't defer to someone else who has more knowledge/experience if that is the best way to achieve the group objective. If everyone tries to lead, the group loses its cohesion and its focus. Five leaders fight or go off in five different directions, and nothing gets accomplished. It's much better to figure out what role one should play in a given situation than to deal in generalities.
No idea if this is the right answer for an interview, but it's genuinely how I feel.

I think it's better to exhibit versatility

Kind of a good question. I would go with the: it depends.
It's a problem when you have too many leader/Alpha/people who don't listen to anyone but themselves in one group.
This is like a 1L study group: one person asks a question, and everyone else talks over the other as loud as possible because everyone is right. It doesn't get shit done.
