V10 Chicago v. V50 NY

The catch? V50 is giving me $35k in scholarship money. The V50 also has the practice area I think I want to go into, but the V10 doesn't. I like both cities pretty equally for different reasons, but have a girlfriend in Chicago. She has a job that would allow her to move easily, but it's still a factor. The V10 is quite prestigious, and everyone was cool, but the V50 has a good reputation in NY as well and I liked everyone there, too. What would you do? Stick with Chi for prestige despite it not having what I think I want to do? Or head to NY for a nice chunk of change and practice area?

There are no V10's in Chicago.
Kirkland is now V11.

Vault rankings are COMPLETELY meaningless when making comparisons like this.

Kirkland and Covington have been swapping the #10 spot for years now. We should consider both V10 or just trim it to V9 now.
OP: Did you know that NYC has fucking CITY TAX? That alone will reduce your take-home by $10k/year. Plus the insane rent for shitty 1920s bedbug-infested apartments...
Take the V10 in Chicago. $160k here is baller --- buy your girlfriend something pretty with the savings.

Er, there is something to be said for the lack of desired practice area at Kirkland (though I'm interested in what that practice area is). That makes the choice more difficult.
Also, WTF, the firm is offering you a $35k scholarship? Have never heard of that before...
Also, wtf, is it a city income tax in NYC?

If you live/work in NYC, you pay Federal, NY state, and New York city income tax. City tax is less than state tax, but it's still a bitch.

If they don't have your practice area, sounds like a dealbreaker. Plus, girlfriend may not work out, and then you are stuck in Chicago with no ties.

Plus, you can take the $$ and lateral elsewhere later if it doesn't work out. Go with what you like, not vault ranking, unless impressing randoms on message boards is that important. This will have very little to do with how you actually like your job or how real people will see you.

I stand corrected. And shocked. I think I'd feel a little weird if my firm did this.
