this is probably a stupid question - but whats the protocol in accepting an offer? would firms think its strange for someone to call back accepting an offer prior to receiving the formal offer letter in the mail? I received an offer by phone call from my top choice and want to be withdrawn from consideration at other firms, but was holding back in case the letter would have some additional information (not that it would change my decision, but just wondering if the firm would assume i had read it.) fwiw i know hiring committees at other firms I met with are meeting soon and would like to withdraw before then so as to not waste anyones time.

apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere in the forum; i couldn't find anything..

Aside from maybe the requisite background check, the formal offer letter won't contain any surprises. I certainly don't think that firms consider you not waiting for the formal offer strange.
