1L summer employment - how tough ITE?

I know there's a bunch of threads on this in the past... but anyone have recent info. to share?
How likely is it to get a PAYING biglaw type gig? I would sleep better at night if I can make some cash over summer to keep my debt down, so I'd truly aim for the highest-paying summer internship I can get.
I know it's not easy but I'd like some perspective. I'm aware I can't start even looking for a few more months, but I want to be the first out the gate so to speak

I'd worry about getting a summer gig at all before I worried about getting a paying one.

Difficult to get a paying one. Your school should provide you with some sort of stipend to do pub service, though.

Just forget about it unless you're like top 5% t14 or URM w/ similar. Even then, it's far from a sure thing.
But, if you insist, get a mass mailing ready to send on Dec. 1st.

Well technically you have to worry about getting a paying gig first since they hire first.

I meant mentally.
Aren't applications sent prior to receiving your first set of grades though? Or does an update with first semester grades show that you are top 5% or such?

Getting a 1L biglaw job is overwhelmingly unlikely to happen. Getting a summer RA gig, however, is entirely doable, so your time would be better spent developing relationships with your profs and doing well in your classes.

Pretty easy to get a 1L SA gig if you're An Bryce at NYU, regardless of where you end up in the class after the first semester.

Funny how the new standard of feasibility is "not impossible"

Your chances are about as good as your chances of surviving the above (assuming the bomb dropped 35 feet from you).

I don't see how knowing how hard it'll be to get a paying job will at all help you be 'the first out the gate.'
Also, I'd recommend focusing on 1L exams before sending off a ton of summer apps. A resume received first thing December 1st won't help you any if your first semester grades are anything short of stellar.

FWIW I chatted with a few 2L's here at UT who said that they know of 8 out of their sections of 100 getting market paying 1L gigs.

The general wisdom is that few firms hire 1L's at all, let alone for paying positions. That isn't uniform though. Some markets, for reasons I can't explain, traditionally hire more 1L's than is normal elsewhere in the country. I personally had two market paying SA gigs this summer as a result of that.

1L grades are largely irrelevant to finding biglaw/midlaw summer gigs, because the application season starts on Dec. 1 according to NALP rules, and you don't get grades back until early/mid January. I was top 10% and IP at a T14 and got almost no response to my mailings in mid-Jan.
The big thing for 1L SAs is prior work experience. Having niche skills (IP, tax, etc) is almost necessary.

The four credited ways to be a 1L summer associate:
1) SEO
2) Diversity Fellowships
3) Anbyce at NYU Law
4) BigTex firms (assuming you have a connection to the market)
Regarding 1-3, since most top firms take 1Ls through those routes, it's rare that there will be additional spots for regular 1Ls when time comes to apply.

If you're going to fix my post, at least have the decency change the "four" above the list to "five."

If you're going to whine about people fixing your post, at least have the decency to stop posting anonymously when you're not revealing anything that could possibly identify you.
