How do most firms operate with regards to assigning work? Is it a free market system at most places, a directed approach, or a hybrid model?

A lot of firms use an assignment system. I don't know what the ratio is of assigning to free market. I thought assignment systems were the norm, but I could easily be wrong on that.

Even in assignment systems, I think there is a degree of free market that goes on. If there's a partner that likes to work with you, he/she can usually request to have you specifically put on a case/deal with (or without?) your consent. You can also talk to partners and ask to be put on one of their cases. If they agree, you can generally be put on.
