+1, though apparently in some markets it's expected.

I've been sending thank-you notes post CB in Texas, but have not done so in New York (unless I seemed to really click w/ that person or was taken out to lunch). Oddly enough, I have done much better in NYC than Texas. So the hell with thank-you notes, I suppose.

What happened?

I have actually been advised by a # of attorneys on hiring committees (largely in the Northeast) not to even bother.

Nope. And gone 3 for 4 on offers from callbacks.

Oh man, discouraging. They take so much time too!

I've stopped sending thank-you notes. I've been on 10 CBs thus far and have received 4 offers. I did not send a single thank-you note to any of the offering firms. However, I have been dinged at 3 firms post CB (I sent thank-you notes to all 3 firms).

I take it that you are being sarcastic, but I find that it takes approximately 1-2 hours to send sincere thank-you notes to all of the interviewers that you met with. If your note is not going to be sincere and individually addressed, why bother even sending?

On the other hand, I sent TY notes to every interviewer in all 5 of my CBs (all individualized based on the interview). I received 4 offers. NYC.

I send thank you emails. I don't have an offer yet (but don't have any dings) so for me, it just downplays the anxiety when I know I've done everything I can. It does take me forever though, because I'm a bit OCD about proofreading. That said, if I get an offer, I'm probably not going to send any more to future callbacks.

I send thank you notes to everyone I talk to, including HR and secretaries. It shows appreciation and enthusiasm, and if you take the time to proofread/use legible handwriting, I don't see how there could be a downside.

I send thank you emails to everyone I interviewed with at a callback - they are short (3-4 sentences) but always touch specifically on at least one thing we spoke about or what I learned from them. I see no downside to this whatsoever (barring typos - and even then, I think most people are forgiving) and some decent upside. Sending a sincere thank you note, if nothing else, will make you stand out in the interviewers mind, and cement their memory of you. It takes half an hour. Do it.

I think the best advice is go with what you feel. If it's a huge chore to write 3 or 4 sentences and you don't see the point (I'm this way) don't bother. If it's not a big deal, than make sure everything is proofread before you send it out. Middle ground might be to just send ones to attorneys who you had a great conversation with.

I'd bet most students send them because that is what most law school's career services offices advise. Doesn't mean its good advice obviously. I'm guessing they have more potential for upside in a smaller, cozier office. I sent them and seem to get more of the "I enjoyed meeting you too..." responses from smaller firms. Then again maybe the cozier atmosphere just made attorneys at these offices feel more compelled to respond. Although, I did get responses from everyone at one very large firm that had a friendlier vibe than some of the other massive firms.
Final analysis: who the heck knows.

Our OCS doesn't say one way or another. In fact, we had a big presentation with a bunch of partners one time, and they specifically told us NOT to send them. I did it anyway. Feels polite to me.
