What do you mean, how would you know that? I know which one I'd pick between the two. Not everyone is indecisive about their preferred practice area.

Yes. You probably actually have to know going into the screening interview, since it's often the first question you ask (at least it was during my screener).

You'll tell them your choice prior to the CB and meet with partners in that practice area, and it will be your practice area during your career at Cravath.

What's so mysterious about that? Did it really require its own post? They're pretty upfront about their system.

How did your "friend" get a callback without understanding that Cravath hires summers into specific practice groups? They're pretty proud of that.

This is seriously unnecessary. I am acquainted with the OP, as his former classmate. As you can see from his post count, he's been around for a while, and did not come here to troll or to brag about anything. A lot of people are probably undecided as to the choice he has to make. I know I am lucky I don't have to make a decision like that on the spur of the moment, but then I am in no position to be anywhere near Cravath. I realize OCI sucks and is a time of tension for everyone, but this is a considered plea for peace. I am happy his interviews have gone well, and wish the same for everyone else ITT.

Well having gone through their callback process, the only thing you really need to know is corporate vs. litigation (b/c you interview with partners and associates and are hired into either of these two groups--along with T&E, Tax, or Exec Comp). Although you do pick a specific practice group to do during the summer (and most starting associates choose to do that practice group for their first rotation--if you hated it, you can also choose to start in another practice group), the whole point of the system is that you get to rotate every 15-18 months after you start.

What I'm trying to say is that you can also view the system as better for those who don't know what practice group they want to do. Most associates stay at their first firm for at least 3 years before they look for other opportunities, meaning that you'll have gone through at least 2 practice groups, and if you absolutely LOVE one of them you can lateral to another firm and only do that. If you're looking to go in-house, you'll be really well-rounded and in a great position as well.

Having 6 months in one practice group or doing a grab bag of assignments if the firm you're at has a free market system does not necessarily introduce you to what it's like to work in one practice group as well as the Cravath system does.

not necessarily. Others ITT have cb at cravath and we are just pointing out the cravath system of rotations. it does seem like bragging to start a thread titled cravath when so many out there are freaking out about employment

Nah. The thread, in retrospect, got to be a bit of an unnecessary pile-on. But I can think of at least five ways to ask fundamentally the same question without it sounding like bragging.

Cravath isn't a good gig for someone who's unable to decide between corporate and litigation work, and it surprises me that anyone called back to interview wouldn't have figured that out.
