What exactly is OCI?

Post by redsox421 » Sat Aug 28, 2010 12:51 am

Forgive my 0L ignorance, but I was wondering how this OCI thing works exactly. Namely, are students who are doing OCI in August/September interviewing for SA gigs, or for fulltime positions? And if they're primarily interviewing for SA's, then it is assumed/implied that, barring a disaster, they will be hired fulltime? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Sounds like you've pretty much got it. OCI = On-campus interviewing. You do an interview, then hopefully get a callback to interview with more people at the firm, and then you hopefully get a 2L SA for the next summer. If that goes well, you should get hired.

So the vast majority of 1st year associates at biglaw firms were SA's at the firm the year before?
(Again, sorry if I sound ignorant, just trying to glean some information.)

Yes. 2L OCI and the subsequent SA is the primary means of obtaining a biglaw firm job.

Gotcha. After seeing all the angst around here regarding OCI, I figured that the interviews were for fulltime jobs, which conflicted with I thought previously....makes sense now though, thanks.
