Do employers want reference letters at OCI?

I was wondering whether I should ask for a letter of reference from my current employer before I leave for school. I assume firms will contact prior employers, but do they expect letters of recommendation or anything like that?
Thanks!

No. I have never heard of a firm requesting a letter of recommendation. You may need these for clerkships, but in that case it would have to be from law school professors, not employers.
At the very most a firm may ask for a list of references (i.e., so they can call them up and chat) but even this is pretty rare.

No. And very few firms actually even call references from a list if provided.

Thank God. I was fired unjustly and have decided it's not worth the mess to try and fix it since school starts so soon. I was worrying about that. As it stands I can say simply that the position ended because I was heading back to school.

Do you think it would be worth it to have the firm I worked for this summer do a quick letter of recommendation to give at the beginning of my interview?

I had 1 firm do that.
I don't think, you should be handing out recommendations at your interview, but you should be ready to answer questions like
What do you like most at your current job?....
