Just wondering if anyone had any information on other firms that did a no-offer to ALL summer asshats.

PS.. Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick -- you are a piece of shit firm. Good luck in the coming years with your Cooley grads.

Edwards, Angel, Palmer & Dodge canceled their summer program last summer (2009) and screwed their summers to be. I know people who were given an offer, accepted and then found out around March of 2009 (roughly) the summer program was canceled; summers were left high and dry.

Great idea for a thread. Bidders should be forewarned.

Thanks. I wasn't the one who got no-offered at Shumaker, but the person who did was screwed by wasting a summer at their firm. Shameful.

This is why I can't stand when firms say something like "ya know, the summer is a time for YOU to see if you like being with US, too!"

If a summer associate doesn't work out with the firm, that firm can always find a ready and able replacement. OTOH, former summer associate is pretty much screwed. It'd be nice if firms stopped pretending it's a two-way street.

Agreed. The Shumaker spiel that was given to my friend was absurd. I wouldn't have near the intensity of hatred if Shumaker would have offered 1 spot to any SA... but to deny every SA is just a "thanks for the work, but go F yourself" stance.

I heartily disagree. Yes the "two way street" thing is a charade, but a useful one. It is not tricking any of the Summer Associates, but it IS making the Firms treat us right. Or at least pretend to.

If they got rid of it and just acknowledged that they hold all the power? That is when you get firms throwing three offers in between 10 SA and watching them fight to the death, or "suggesting" the summer associates stay until 8 every day and come in on the weekends too.

SAs hold power in the sense that they can/will speak well of the firm or they can knock the firm when they return to school. It may seem silly but this is something with which firms are concerned. Someone from the hiring committee talked to me about this very thing during my SA in a friendly, outside of work conversation. Firms are concerned with reputation amongst students, because they want to recruit top talent from schools. Abovethelaw and forums like this further empower students to widely disseminate abuse of SAs by firms, making firms more accountable for mistreatment. Of course, the balance of power is still not even.
