ITE you take the offer anyway, if they give you one, and then lateral out after 2 or 3 years. Unless you're on law review at a t14, I guess.

If you do get an offer, you will likely have some time to mull it over. During that time, you can interview elsewhere or do whatever you like. If nothing else pans out, you can simply take the offer you have in hand.

how do you interview at other places, without it getting back to your firm? Idk if that's good advice for OP. That sounds risky, especially .... wait for it .... ITE.

Well, if they have given you an offer, they cannot rescind it because they heard you were interviewing. So while you shouldn't go telling them you are interviewing other places, you are fine so long as you accept by the deadline. If they have not given you and offer yet, then they shouldn't care. You would be stupid to just wait around in that instance, and they know it.

Sure they can. At will employment.

Would they do that? That seems harsh given you're not doing anything unethical.

No, they are required to hold open the offer for a certain ammount of time once they have given it. Don't remember if it is NALP or the ABA which makes them do it.

They can rescind it for almost any other reason, but not because you took too long to respond or are considering other potential offers (at least not before the deadline).

False. They can do whatever they want. You are at will. They can fire you for liking a different sports team, never mind for interviewing elsewhere.

The ABA or NALP police aren't going to enforce an employment contract or provide damages. They have almost no teeth.

Even if the firm doesn't outright withdraw due to your interviewing elsewhere, your delay in acceptance will be remembered by the firm; at least, at most firms. They want to you be excited about their firm, or at least appear to be excited. Those who are ambivalent will be the first to get axed if someone needs to be let go.

To answer your question in a rather crude manner (sorry the saying is just too applicable): you eat shit and grin like it's ice cream.

If they found out you were interviewing elsewhere you don't think they would find one of those "other reasons" to rescind your offer?!?!

It is very normal not to accept end-of-summer offers on the spot, because many rising 3Ls are applying for clerkships around that time. So what you do is:
- apply for jobs through 3L OCI and other ways
- apply for clerkships.

If none of that pans out, take the job and try to get out after a few years. (Or if you really can't face the prospect of working there, decline the offer and risk unemployment.)
