UVA Preselects have been posted. Quick check to see how people fared in this OGI.

I'm a little bit above median, focused on DC and CA, got 13 preselects with a pretty even split between the two areas, 4 alternates.

Why DC with that gpa?

I don't really belong in this thread, but I just wanted to ask out of curiosity what the average number of interviews at UVA is.

edit: 43 pre-selects, 2 alternates, 5 "not invited." Mostly in DC.

Personal reasons. Otherwise, I'd probably avoid DC like the plague as has been recommended by many.

Note that not every firm's selections have been uploaded.

Just above top quarter. Think 3.50-3.55. Focused on NYC, CA, and two small Western secondary markets.

Got 4 out of my Top 5, 19 other preselects, 8 alternate picks. Did well in all markets except Bay Area (no connections there). Overall I anticipate ending up with 25+ interviews after the lottery runs. Very pleased.

People got KILLED in DC as I (and many others) predicted. Even people with 3.5s and 3.6s took a beating in DC compared to other markets. Basically DC is a nightmare unless you grade on to Law Review, as I'm quite sure the person with 45 preselects did.

Ignorant 0Ls who fawn over "UVA's placement in DC," please take note of this thread.

I should probably know this - do alternates count toward the max of 30?

Hey. Congrats.
You said you focused on CA. You also said you did well in all markets except Bay Area because of a lack of connections. Did focus on other areas of CA where you did well? What's your impression of UVA's placement in CA generally without connections? As bad as you found in the Bay Area specifically?

I guess I didn't do that poorly, really. Here's how it turned out:

Bay Area: 5 bids, 3 preselects, 2 alternate selections
Los Angeles: 5 bids, 3 preselects
Orange County: 4 bids, 3 preselects
San Diego: 2 bids, 1 alternate selection

NYC: 29 bids, 12 preselects, 5 alternate selections
Secondary markets: 5 bids, 2 preselects

All my connections are to SoCal.

CS says no, but that if you get off the alternate list, they'll fix it so that you get your top 30 firms.
Other question: if you accept an alternate spot, are you taken out of the lottery for that firm?

Kevin Donovan is great, but I fault him for mentioning alternates and the lottery so often near one another. Alternates are automatic: as soon as people have declined their pre-selects, the alternate list slots interviews where possible. Once that process is done and finished, the lottery is run. So if you fail to get an alternate, you'll be in the lottery (and obviously if you get an alternate you will not be).

I'm very encouraged by his most recent email. An average of 9 pre-selects is stellar, and quite a bit better than last year. After alternates, the lottery, etc. I think people will be sitting on many more interviews than in the past.

Which firms haven't turned in their bids yet? I suspect Paul Weiss NY.

I was preselected at Paul Weiss NY. Sorry! I did go from alternate to preselect at some places already, so it's possible that selections (esp. top 5) are still being put in.

I don't have exact figures, but I heard lots of stories of people with top quarter like grades getting 5 or fewer pre-selects. As has been discussed at length in this forum, those who bid on DC were hit the worst, but I heard few stories of more than ~10 pre-selects outside of people who graded on to LR.

Last year was 50/50 though, so that skews things.

PW is in my top 5.

Is it bad that I went through and already accepted all my alternate slots? No chance they'll turn into preselects now???

I accepted an alternate slot before it became a preselect. Don't panic!
