Coming from T40 to SLS. Top 5 overall at prior school. 4.1 GPA. Currently in D.Ct externship.
What's the best firm/office in SoCal I can get?
What's a safe bet?

How high do I target for OCI? LA is preferred, but not necc. NO IP.
UG 3.8x/175, fwiw -- should this be advertised?
Thx.
Sorry to derail, but how did you end up at a
top 40 with those numbers????????

Accidentally. Applied to one school w/ limited perspective on LS, practice, etc. Attempting to correct mistake now.

Christ-- you're the rare person who
should have been wasting a lot of time on this website before they applied to law school. You would have gotten into Harvard and possibly Stanford/Yale (very likely Stanford) before you entered your 1L year.

Wait what... how did you get an A/A- average and a 99% LSAT score... and only apply to one law school?
Biggest disconnect of preparation and intelligence + haphazard application with no knowledge ever. I'd call flame, except for the fact that its anon, so i guess it really happend.... maybe... i'm still doubtful

thought i would hate law school. was plan B behind grad schools. tbh, applied only to appease a friend. realized i liked it once i got there. realized i wanted broader options.
live and learn.

You'll definitely get Biglaw if you want it... as for how high, i'd guess just apply to stuff like your median at SLS, should work out about right.

This is dumb. Apply like you've got a 4.1 at your T40, and then probably give it a slight bump. I doubt that you're going to be shut out at any more than one or two firms (if that) because of your credentials.
Ummm, I'd say median at SLS better/slightly better then 4.1 at T40... so ur giving him the exact same advice i did

Is Stanford not going to give you its opinion on this? Yale is having OCS speak to transfers about this and other things in a week or so, and I would imagine you guys would have the same thing. If not, I'd contact OCS. My guess is, considering the school you're coming from and assuming that you were top 5% at least, you should bid like a top 1/3 kid at Stanford.
Edit: sorry just saw you're a top 5 kid. I'd still speak with OCS, but maybe top 1/4 instead? Really it's tough to say and OCS would know better how transfers fare from each school range.

Except median at SLS looks the same as bottom of the class at SLS; employers may well appreciate seeing that OP can kill it.
With most 1Ls taking 12-13 classes for H/P and the classes in the third quarter being slightly easier b/c the 2L/3L in the classes had checked out already, I'd guesstimate that median is about 3-5 H's and bottom of class would be straight P's or just 1H.
As for OP, I would look at the data available from the ocs website. Look at the grade distribution under the old curve. Coming from T40 might hurt you a bit since the top firms would likely hire no one from your old school. I would talk to OCS about it, try Lee Kite (she's usually very honest). I think you should bid whatever firms you want to work for and see what happens, but don't waste your bids on the very elite firms (look at the Fall 2009 spreadsheet--these are the firms where there were 3 or fewer offers and over 20 interviews).

Interesting, according to TLS this doesn't happen at HYS.

Any chance you could post what those firms were? Just curious.

It's confidential info but, for example Cravath only had 23 or so summer associates so 3-5 offers from SLS is huge. Also factor in the fact that people who had top grades but wanted CA/DC may not have interviewed with Cravath (since it's popular and you have to rank it high).
With that said, whoever said ITE is everywhere is correct, and OCS is telling us that this year's OCI will be about the same as last years.

I would have thought that's because it's not worth it for a firm to go to a school where you're only looking at a handful of people, which are the same people other firms will be looking at. But here OP will be at SLS (and will have a nice prestigious JD for the firm to advertise), so the question is what the firm will think of his academic credentials, and not the cost-benefit analysis of doing OCI at the T40 school. Maybe you're right, but it doesn't make a heck of a lot sense to me.
prestige is important but firms also want good lawyers. With there being an abundance of law students with a proven track record against other law students of similar caliber, some firms need not take a chance with a transfer student. While a 4.1 at a T40 may in actuality be more intelligent and harder working than a median student at SLS, the firm won't know that for sure. And if the firm doesn't usually do OCI at the T40, they won't know the quality of the top students there and may just take a 1/3 MVPB student than the transfer student even if the latter will have a more prestigious JD.

If what people posted in the OCI thread about Duke's numbers are true, I feel like people are being a bit entitled. Yes things are not the way they were when 100 percent of people who wanted a 160K+ job at a top 14 got one, but considering what a lot of Americans are facing in this recession I think that we could all be a bit less entitled than what we are. A lot of people (including well respected psychologists etc.) think our generation is the most narcissistic and entitled ever, I hate to say it but I agree. ITE maybe everywhere but I doubt SLS grads are struggling to pay their bills (feel fee to correct me if I'm wrong legends). I'm definitely thankful to be at a top 10 considering I have friends at tier 4 schools---imagine what they are facing.

well considering that most people at SLS students come from upper class families I doubt anyone would be struggling to pay their bills even if they graduate with no job.

After you start paying in the high 5-figure range yearly + grinding yourself to pieces trying to learn a new school in direct competition with similarly bright and motivated peers for the chance to attempt to get a legal job, you just might start feeling entitled too.

I've heard this many many times about Stanford (maybe even more so than about HLS or YLS). Why do you think that is? Not that I need to worry about it but do you think that this would lead them to give a large need based grant package to a very low income admit? No offense but that also seems like a bit of a snobby social crowd to be around if you are an SLS student.
