can my boss help me get a job?

My boss has a pretty legit position now as general counsel of a very prominent national non-profit (where I'm working). Decently connected, clearly the ambitious connector type. About 10 years ago, after graduating from HYS, he worked for 3 years as an associate at the NY branch of a v50 firm that I am very interested in working at.
This firm is coming to my OCI at GULC. I am in the top 25% and relatively competitive from a GPA standpoint. I'd prefer the chicago office, but I'd take NY of this firm if I had the chance. So my question is, will my boss be of any help in getting an interview/offer/job, assuming he really likes me? Is a 3 year associate from 10 years ago enough to have any sway with the firms recruiters? Or does it just depend on if he knows anyone still at the firm? Any advice on how to leverage this relationship into an interview or job? Thanks
