Annoying Cornell Law Review Question re: Other Journals

First, Two Apologies: 1. Needed to post annonymously, so I put this is this forum; 2. Yesterday, I found out I made Law Review at Cornell, but something is bothering me.

So, anyway, I received form rejection letters from the two secondary journals. It was my understanding that the other journals would make offers to candidates regardless of whether they were offered spots on LR or other journals. Was I wrong about that, or did the secondary journals just not like my submission?

Was anybody accepted to LR AND either of the other two journals.

Once again, I apologize for my obnoxiousness, but I am really curious.

I also received the Cornell law review offer and rejections from the secondary journals. My theory is that they assume you would choose the LR, if anything at all, so the journals turn us down. Also, there was only one week before the deadline of submitting resumes to job fair. It would not make sense to let our classmates wait our decisions and risk having nothing on journal on their resume.

plz post full list of names making LR when you can. initials are fine, too, no need for full names.

When the membership of all the journals are complete, the journals themselves will email the list out.

I am the OP. Thanks for the info. I too, am interested to find out who is "on." It is kind of an awkward question to ask if they people don't tell you directly or you are not pretty good friends. In any case, kind of strange to get two rejection letters.

I have no idea why you care (would you actually take ILJ or JLPP over Law Review?), but I made Law Review and was rejected at both secondaries. I know a bunch of people who also made LR, and none of them received additional acceptances. I'm sure that if your writing comp. score/grades were good enough to get onto LR, you could petition ILJ or JLPP (JLPP especially) to let you join their staff instead. As was mentioned above, I'm sure they just assumed you would take LR. Which you should. It's really not even close to being a legitimate question - if you're really interested in international law or public policy, you can still write your note on one of those topics for LR.

Not really sure what you mean by "legitimate question." I don't enjoy getting rejected from shit so I wanted to know if other people had a similar experience. The posts confirm what I thought. I have no interest in ILJ or JLPP but actually think that it is bad form (and really a bit odd) for those journals to send "rejection" letters for people whom they would theoretically love to have on staff. I can understand the idea that the journals want to give their own staffs a sense of finality and not have a bunch of LR people steal their slots, but I don't think that would really ever happen. To me the question was close to legitimate and I am happy to hear the answers. Sorry to have wasted 2 minutes of your precious time.

OP - I meant that if you happened to be considering working on ILJ or JLPP vs. Law Review that THIS would not even be close to a legitimate question, not that your original post was illegitimate. So, take it easy. Did not mean to offend.

Think of ILJ and JLPP rejections as yield protection. They have needs, too, like setting their staff early enough to let everyone who will be working on those journals update their resumes for AJF. Stuff like this is so bureaucratic that if they invited LR people, they likely couldn't get everything done in time with trying to keep track of everyone's responses and whatnot.

Congrats on Law Review.

OP, if you would like more information about the process you can PM me. But otherwise your classmates have the right answer.

I call bullshit on having "no interest in ILJ or JLPP". If you did not apply to ILJ or JLPP, you would not have received rejections. That you now, after getting accepted to LR, have no interest in ILJ or JLPP, is a wholly different matter.

OP here - No, I would have happily worked for ILJ or JLPP if I did not get the LR call. Leahnic - Thanks for your offer, but I am happy with this answer to my simple neurotic question. Sorry to come off chippy in my last post. Thanks for your answers and see y'all in a couple of weeks.

You can submit extra material to JLPP if you don't make JLPP. However, the process for 2013 is over and the write-on members have already been added to the masthead that was sent out last week.

Thanks for the information. I'm actually just an incoming student wondering what the whole write on process is like. Something like, one a scale of 1 to 10, how painful is it?

I didn't have to worry about that but I don't think it's the process that's painful. Once you're on the journal as a write-on it appears you do bitch work.
Anonymous User wrote:did the journal list of new associates get published?
They were emailed out to the members of each journal and therefore very easy to acquire if you have more than five friends.

Does the process start immediately after finals? I will probably sublet my apartment in the summer, but if we have a week or so allotted for the writing competition immediately after finals, I will just stay in Ithaca for the added week. Away from friends and distractions!

Yes, it starts right after finals. Cornell's Taking Questions thread would be a better place for these questions, btw.

OP you should be embarrassed that you asked this horrible question. You got onto Law Review, end of story. You're probably going to do great when it comes to interviews unless you are a mouthbreather. Think of all of the students who would love to be in your position right now and then ask yourself, does it matter, even the tiniest bit, that you received perfunctory rejection letters from the secondary journals?

Seriously. OP, I'm sure your classmates will happily share your posts and try to figure out who you are. This is one of the most obnoxious posts I've ever seen on TLS.

Edit: the joke is on me. Sorry. I'm sure OP is having a great life after graduation. Still that post will remain my high mark for obnoxious behavior.
