Top 5% in a T30 - Prospects for eastcoast?

Top 5% rising 2L at a midwest T30...top UG (but w/ a particularly unimpressive record). I want to make my way to the east coast (DC if I had my druthers, or NYC), but I'm pretty sure that I haven't done well enough to make that happen. Is it worth it for me to apply to east coast biglaw firms going into OCI season, or should I just resign myself to my T30's secondary (Midwest/non-Chicago) market?

Shoot. Top 5% at a t30 or whatever should give you a shot at V100 firms in NY or DC as long as you can sell why you want to live in those cities.
Not a sure bet mind you... but you should be able to interview with every firm that comes to your school since you are at the top of the class. If you want NY V100, you are probably one of the few students at your school who could pull it off. If some NY office comes to your school for OCI, they are open to hiring SOMEONE and you are at the very top of the class... Why not go for it? I don't think it is unreasonable...
Now, on the other hand, if your plan is to just carpet bomb NY and DC with your resume and transcript... might be less successful.

Thx a ton for the response. I'm a non-trad w/ a few years of WE in NYC. I would love DC (closer to my fam), but all I have is an internship there, so I'm not really sure if I can sell it.

Oh, that is great. You have a real shot... now you just need some offices from NY/DC to come to your OCI.

Sadly, I doubt it's that easy. I'm a Southerner, who went to school in New England, lived in NYC for a few years for consulting, who's now wanting to get to DC.
I'm fucked, I know. I just needed the TLS confirmation. Le sigh.

The only way you are fucked is if no offices from DC or NY come to your school... which I suppose is possible. Have you spoken to your career services?
If those offices are flying out there, then they are open to hiring from your school and, as someone in the top 5%, YOU are one of the few people they would actually consider giving an offer to.

If you're at IU it's going to be tough. Only really have Indy firms coming. Bid everywhere and resume spam east coast firms and see if something bites. Good luck, this is sadly a case where the job prospects don't mirror the ranking of the school really at all.

Ah. No offices coming makes this an order of magnitude more difficult.
Resume bombing ITE is not going to go well.
Here is a thought: go speak to your favorite professors... surely they have old friends/classmates that are partners at places?

OP here:
Really good thought....one I hadn't had. Thx. Not OH or IN...maybe that narrows it down? I'm the only person from my UG at my LS, so that's why I went anon. All I really care about is getting back to the east coast, where my friends (NYC) or family (DC) are.

The people at my school who were the MOST invested in my professional success seemed to be the professors... not career services.
You must have impressed a few of them to be in the top 5%. Pick 2 or 3 of your favorites and roll in there and explain your story. See what they can do. You never know...
I bet most of them were YLS/HLS/CLS... so they must know people.

There are no off-campus interview programs? A close friend of mine at my school (t-50, top 3%) has nabbed more than ten interviews with big
law firms nyc via an off-campus interview program.

I just thought a T-30 would participate in off-campus interview programs to extend the reach of its student body
