Clerkship offer during 1L summer

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jul 13, 2010 10:18 pm

Hello all I would really appreciate some advice. I currently attend a T2 school, am within the top 20% and am on law review for the upcoming year. From what I have noticed my school's OCI has been hit hard and it will be tough to get a SA through OCI so I am relying on mass mailing smaller and mid law firms. I recently talked to the judge I am working for this summer, a circuit court judge in a secondary market about the tough economy. She basically told me she was very impressed with my work and offered me a spot as her law clerk the fall after I graduate. She told me that when I finish my summer there she would provide me with an envelop including an offer. Do you think this offer of clerking in a metro area in a circuit court will be beneficial to my long term legal career especially considering my current school level and class rank?

Thanks for the help.

No, if it were that it would not be an issue haha, its a state level circuit court. Not in the middle of no where, a decent size city.

Edit: nevermind. I assumed federal circuit. Perhaps not a flame.

Not a flame, its in the area I want I just don't want to accept the offer with the possibility that I am selling myself short. It seems to me that it is still a good position to be in especially ITE.

Yes I would like to end up in a law firm in this state, the judge additionally told me she has connections to federal prosecutors offices and can "almost guarantee" that I would be in a good place to end up in one of those offices if I desire. The offer sounded to good to be true, I just wanted to get some input from others.

Seems good. Set up appointments to talk to/email some alumni in the area who work for firms you might be interested in and get their advice. Don't trust TLS on this, but it's certainly an apparently attractive offer.

Take it. Especially in this market, I don't know why this is even a question. Congrats!

State Circuit Judge in an area you want to work, deferring the job search for a year. That's a solid option, and gives you a good "in" to local small/midlaw. Very solid option, you should take it.

No but closer, regardless of the city, I was just wondering what kind of impact it could have my legal career. I know from working in the chambers it will be a lot of fun for one year but, more curious about where I would go after the year was over.

I was not really expecting it to be honest. I went to talk to the judge about the job market and she asked me what I wanted to do after I graduated. I said litigation but in an ideal world I would clerk first. In response she offered me the position on the spot, she said she hired a year in advance and almost always from her interns.

Seems pretty crazy to me.
