Is there a general sentiment regarding starting a career in BigLaw outside of NYC? I used to work in finance and everybody would tell me (bosses, colleagues, etc.) that NYC was far and away the best place to start a career in finance. Obviously, there are remote offices (i.e. SF, Houston, etc) which offer great jobs, but just not quite up to par with NYC.

Is this sentiment similar in the legal world?

Being the tradecenter of the world, I would figure.

Can anyone do anything more than 'figure'? Anybody have any experience in this or firsthand knowledge?

I think that this is generally true of non-IP/non-regulatory transactional practices within biglaw. For example, a top M&A practice in Chicago is unlikely to compare favorably to a top M&A practice in New York. I do not think this is true of litigation practices.

I have the same question. How does the Los Angeles market compare to NYC?

I've heard LA's flea market is the finest in the country.
