These judges want you to come interview with them right after they call you (so planning head is out). So the cost to fly across the country and stay for a night to interview is going to run roughly $500-1000 per interview. Even with a mere 20 interviews, that's $10,000-$20,000 just to interview (even if I only went on 3 interviews, that could be $3,000-- money that I just don't have). Where do I come up with this kind of money to interview with judges for clerkships? ... I want to apply to every state/judge I'm interested in, but a lot of those are on the west coast/not in the contiguous 50 states (i.e. Hawaii/PR/Guam) and incredibly expensive to fly out to for a day, particularly when you need to fly out a few days after getting a call. Suggestions on where to come up with this kind of money (besides robbing a bank or selling drugs)?

You put the word "mere" before the phrase "20 interviews" in the context of judicial clerkships. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

credited. Unless you have an outstanding resume (and that does not mean top 10%, LR at t14), getting 20 interviews for clerkships would be fantastic by all accounts.

How about summer job money? You can also try to schedule interviews that are in the same geographic area at the same time to cut costs.

I was thinking of using money from loans, but we only get something like $15K /year to live off, so something like $3K out of that is pretty substantial (I think that's like a year worth of food in the budget). My parents also don't have any money (my family is generally pretty poor). And there's no way to repay the credit card (as if a credit card company would give me that kind of a credit like with my existing student debt anyways, lol)... Maybe I do need to just start selling drugs to make this happen

So are most of you that got clerkships, or are applying to them, just applying to the region your school is in (or alternatively, were lucky enough to make $30K this summer and didn't have any responsibilities or other places you needed to use a good amount of it)?

Have you asked whoever is in charge of helping students find clerkships at your school? There may be extra travel loans or grants available for students who can't otherwise afford to go interview.

Not to be mean, but the "selling drugs" reference wasn't funny the first time. This reminds me of the very painful situation of watching someone try to tell a joke multiple times to the sound of crickets chirping and thinking they just didn't say it right the first time or something.

damn straight. it just made me think of douchey mcdoucherson a while back who actually argued in favor of stripping/prostitution/selling drugs as a means of funding LS.....

I was lucky enough to get a job paying the $30k. However, I figured that if I used a percentage of that salary to get a clerkship, it would be good investment. If you're competitive for a solid clerkship, I'd definitely talk to your clerkship committee to see if there's some way they can help you out.
