I am a rising-2L that had a successful first year at my regional law school (tier 2). I was fortunate enough to get a 1L SA big law job in the location I hope to work in. The summer has been great, but as I get ready to apply for next summer, I am curious about a particular issue.

Last semester, I got two big firm callbacks. This may not sound like a lot, but it was more than a large majority of my class- the economy has really affected firms in this area. Out of those two callbacks, one gave me an offer, which I accepted, and the other did not offer me a position. I am now getting ready to apply for next summer. Many of the firms which I applied to last summer (including several that did not offer a callback and the firm which granted a callback but did not offer an acceptance) are some of my target firms for this summer. Does the fact that I have already had the opportunity to interview and not gotten an offer hurt me, or is this a pretty common issue? I imagine that it wouldn't be a huge deal- virtually every student in my class applied at many of these same firms and most did not get an offer. Still, it is hard to be sure- especially with the firm that did not offer me a position after granting me a callback.

It doesn't make sense for you to be barred at this firm. 1L hiring is a lot different than 2L hiring.

Plus, even if it does hurt you (which I suspect it doesn't), isn't it too late now?

I actually talked with the head of the career office at my school and she told me exactly the same thing: you can apply again as a 2L without any worries. Like the other posters have said, 1L hiring is completely different from 2L hiring. For one, they are much much more selective in hiring 1L's than 2L's.

At my old job (consultant) we had several people who reapplied for fulltime after not getting a callback at all for an internship or getting called back but ultimately cut.

We actually looked very favorably on candidates who reapplied (especially those who were called back and ultimately cut since we liked them the first time around) It is true that we were much more selective for the internship than for fulltimes and we saw it as a sign of strong interest in our company that people would reapply after being rejected the first time around, which we appreciated.
