Top Law Schools

Top 20%, secondary journal, TTTT UG, I think I am social but not counting on being a spectacular interviewer.

Really need to cut out at least 3 of the 13 firms below. I know I have several reaches, and I'd like to keep some of them, but not if I have 0% of a callback:

Baker & Hostetler
Baker & McKenzie
Bracewell & Giuliani
hogan lovells
King & Spalding
Troutman Sanders

The reachy ones:

Boies Schiller (not many interview slots)
Covington (small class, not many interview slots, but apparently easy to get an interview due to low interest)
Davis Polk (tons of interview slots, but wonder if their UG prestige focus and my grades auto-ding me on getting a CB)
Paul Weiss (not many interview slots, but probably my favorite of the bunch)
Simpson (tons of interview slots)
Skadden (tons of interview slots)
Weil Gotshal (tons of interview slots)

I've already cut out Cleary and Debevoise as too selective for me to bid - are DPW/Covington/PW/etc. just as selective?

Covington DC would probably be completely impossible, they are extremely snobby. I doubt Covington NYC is enough less snobby to make it worth while.

Boeis is a weird firm, but hire more like top 10% types from the T10.

Davis Polk tends to hire from the top 10% out of most of the T10 as well.

So for those three firms, you might be well advised to cut and run. Handy, since you're looking to cut three firms...

Paul Weiss, Simpson Thatcher, Hogan Hartson, Weil, and most Skadden offices hired from the ~top 20% in good days, and may have firmed up their selectivity. They're long shots, but as long as your list is populated by other less long-shoty firms you should be alright. You should realize that getting these interviews will probably have a fairly low success rate. I don't think anybody but career services can tell you how selective those firms got last year - but they were historically just at your target, so my guess is they aren't going to be very fertile, but it's hard to predict in advance.

talk to career services. Top 20% means that some of the V5-V10 (obviously not skadden) and W&C type firms would be a waste of a bid, but for the rest it's probably worth bidding. It depends on how risk averse you are, and how many firms you have to populate the bottom of your list.

I've talked to career services and they basically said that all of my reaches were possible, but far from probable. The thing that hangs me up about nixing a lot of my reaches is that my reaches (the V10 and V20 type firms) are mostly taking 50+ person SA classes while many of the other NY firms I'm bidding take only 5-10 SAs per year.

Top 20% Non-LR kids can get Cleary and Deb. They are worth the bid.
