trial law building blocks

So over the course of the summer, I've decided to pursue a long-term career path of becoming a trial lawyer.

1) Is the best way to build my trial law ability - to 1) become an AUSA, 2) District attorney, 3) Public defender, in that order?
2) While in law school, are the best things to do: 1) Trial Ad, 2) Moot Court, 3) Inter- law school trial competition, in that order?

I've heard that becoming a big law associate is basically going to result in zero forward progress toward trial skills, as I will spend 99% of my time in desktop-litigation.

I'm totally ignorant about this area, so be gentle if anything I've said above is stupid.
