Is Duke at the same level as Berkeley/Stanford/Columbia as a phenomenal t10 IP for big law?

No, though there are definitely good IP people at Duke: Arti Rai, Jerome Reichman, etc.

I honestly do not think the strength of the IP program matters too much. Just go to the best law school you can. You can take a few IP classes anywhere, and I think that is all you need.

More than IP professors, I think you should be concerned with whether your school places well in IP firms for 2L summer (and whether a lot of alumni work in IP). I think this is much more important than whether it has top professors in the area, in my opinion. In underestimated this when choosing schools. And I think on campus hiring is the most important (by far) benefit of going to a school with a strong IP program.

I am doing IP from Duke. We do have a good IP program, but from what I understand this advice is correct. Specialization matters for IP in that there are a few lower ranked schools that are competitive with the top schools. Anything in the top 14 should be just fine for IP.

Oh, but make sure you sign up for the Loyola Patent program in Chicago no matter what school you go to. I have not gone yet (it is at the end of July), but from what I heard the majority of IP 2 now 3Ls here at Duke got their jobs there.
