are they just being nice? i guess what i am getting at is do these firms actually hire anyone outside the top 15%? looking on NALP, some of these firms still have decently high salaries both for 2ls and associates. they also have generous offerings to 2l summer associates for full time positions.

We had the same issue. My school gave bidding guidelines that I found somewhat optimistic given the decrease in class sizes. Actual callback GPA might be a good bit higher depending on the firm and the school.

Your school has the exact data of who was hired where. Ask to look at it.

At Hastings, MoFo lists top 25% required...how legit is that? I would have thought 5-10% for a firm that size

They all sound "legit" to me, they could say top 50% required and only hire top 5% and it wouldn't be contradictory, if you don't make the cut they won't look at you at all guaranteed, that's all it means to me. Maybe they would be willing to hire a 3.0 if they were otherwise exceptional and somehow got lucky enough to get the interview in the first place.

I was told by my adviser that they are suggestions more than hard-fast rules. obviously, if they say top 10% and you are top 25% its prob not worth your time...but if you are top 23% and the firm says top 20% it is very well worth your time.

Cutoffs listed on Symplicity are useless.
At my T14 there is a mid-size Atlanta firm that lists "Top 10% required." The firm regularly takes people below median. There is also a V25 DC firm that says "B+ average or better" that you'd probably need top 10% to have any chance at.
A lot of firms seem to list the same "cutoff" at every school (like top 10% or top 25%) but definitely aren't sticking to it at the top schools.

Strange, at Davis I don't see any top 25% required for MoFo... >_>

All 3 MOFO postings on Simplicity (IP [also requires technical background], SF, Palo Alto) say top 25% preferred, Moot Court preferred, Journal preferred.

Don't pay too much attention to those. They often have little basis in reality. A lot of firms that asked for "B or higher" when I did OCI were actually looking for 3.5+.

I could imagine a firm being legit when they say 3.0 or higher. Some firms aren't necessarily even looking for top 50% depending on the rank of your school.

Skadden is coming to Notre Dame and has no requirements listed at all. Though that may be because no one has a shot anyway.

In the current economy, this really only applies to schools that give traditional grades (i.e. HYS).

Exactly...Paul Hastings and a few other megafirms did exactly the same for Hastings OCI

Yup. Your classmates probably have acquired copies through illicit means so ask around.
