Is the value of a clerkship to employers limited to the area in which the judge is located? For example, if someone were to get a district court clerkship in Iowa, would they still be an attractive candidate (because of their clerkship) to firms in D.C. or N.Y.?

I am asking because my best chances are in my school's region, but my school's region is not where I would like to end up practicing. I would, however, be willing to stay in the region for a year or two if it is for a clerkship.

Yes, but less attractive than a candidate with a clerkship in DC or NY.

But you're not necessarily an attractive candidate because of the clerkship. You were probably already a good candidate. Assuming you have the creds for a federal clerkship, you have biglaw creds. The clerkship may help a little, but for example, a clerkship in Iowa probably won't help much when it comes to getting a job with a firm that you weren't already qualified for.
