Top Law Schools

I am currently working in big firm as summer associate. I found some other SAs took their laptop to home everyday. I get to office at 8:30 and leave at around 6 (lunch is about 1 hour long) and do not work at home. Is this normal? Are SA supposed to work more? I am a bit worried. Thanks!

Be very worried. You would be on the "no offer" list in my book. Partners do not care if you take a laptop home. Face time is more valueable and if you are not putting in enough time at the office, that is an indicator that you will be a bare minimum type of slacker. If you keep up your current pace, don't be surprised by the no offer. A SA that works and bills time on Memorial Day AND July 4th is the type of go-getter that will get the nod at the end of the summer.

I worked 9 to 6-8pm during my summer. I occasionally worked on weekends but only when I had pressing Monday morning deadlines. If there is work to do, make sure it's done and done well. If you don't have work, let your summer program people know and if you have to wait until the next day, going home at 5/6pm is fine. Like TTT-LS said, it's far more important to put out quality product and network than bill hours.

My firm requires us to account for at least 7.5 hours of our time, excluding lunch. So I'm usually there from 9-7.

Yeah, at the V10 firm that I'm in charge of hiring for, he'd certainly be on the "no offer" list in my book as well.

Does "being in charge of hiring" mean you work for a law firm? or are a hiring partner at a law firm?

Check his history. He is not a hiring partner at a law firm. After all, if he was he'd be at the office working right now not posting on TLS.

Actually, if he was a hiring partner, he'd be at home waiting to hear from his associates that they got everything done that needed to be taken care of.
