Two points: no-offers are not just embarassing, they're expensive. You've already paid the guy $30k, plus expenses. Makes no sense to no-offer more than the occasional screwup if you don't have to.

Also, the 2009 data isn't a good measure. It includes no-offers, which disproportionately hit top schools and which are unlikely to be a problem for C/O 2011 (for above-mentioned reason). If CLS placed 67% through EIW, between clerkships and PI you can expect 50%-ish NLJ250 placement total.

This was my thought as well... that's a lot of money to spend on training and recruiting someone to just let him or her go.
