Susman Godfrey does OCI at CLS and is known here as a very selective high-end lit boutique.
I would imagin Susman Godfrey is relatively little-known outside of legal circles, but within the legal community, and especially litigation, they are very well known, at least that's my impression. In other words, lots of people may not know about Susman Godfrey, but if they do know of them, they are very highly regarded (probably equal to if not more prestigious than many V10s).
Edit: Also, I am sure you have done your research regarding the cutoffs at Texas, but my impression is at CLS you basically need to be Top 10% + law review to get an SA there. I know one of the two kids from CLS who is working there and he fits that profile.

Peruse their website. They only take the best (COA clerk material). But they're tiny. So getting an offer will probably be very random. I don't care if you're number 1 at UT. They don't "need" you. So landing an offer would be impressive. As impressive as landing an offer at Wachtell. I wouldn't be worried about the prestige thing. I don't think the cachet of your 2L job is nearly as important as your grades + LR + LOR for landing a good clerkship.

I have asked about this very directly to people 'in the know' about clerkships and selection (think judges, important professors, clerkship coordinators, etc.). Every single one has responded that it doesn't matter - that you should spend 2L summer working for a firm that you like, and that even if you pick a totally non-prestigious firm over a Susman/Wachtell/W&C it really won't have an impact for the vast majority of judges.
I'm sure there are plenty of reasons to gun for Susman regardless, but that should not be at the top of your list.

They're as good as it gets prestige wise. There are people that have turned down WLRK for them. Soul crushing hours, though, particularly for a Texas firm.

I guess I need to phrase my info-gathering threads a little more diplomatically

Just remember, no selling out.
We're going to keep our eyes on you until after this eventual clerkship and make sure you do public interest work in Texas like you said you would when you turned down Harvard for UT.

hehehe. good call. Haven't changed any plans here, but ITE is so bad that I may have to lateral into my preferred field. Seems like a lot of the groups I'm interested in have hiring freezes right now.

Same problem in my territory of Minnesota.

i find it incredibly hard to believe you couldn't figure this out in advance
then again i suppose it could just as easily be more evidence of the general social ineptitude of law students

Don't sweat it. Just realize that people here might be understandably bitter... ITE and all. Congratulations on your success.
Something to keep in mind as you receive offers: Don't just chase after "prestige" or "reputation." Really look for fit. Have a few friends who were deciding between Susman and places like V&E, F&J, and Baker Botts, all chose one of the latter three because the guys at Susman seemed douchey all around (one even showed me her interviewer's profile online... pretty douchey). Just like interviewers are looking to see whether they can stand you at 2am weeknights, look to see whether you can stand them as well.

I don't get it... if esc was lusting after something prestigious that isn't Texas biglaw... why did he turn down Harvard for Texas???

lol i don't understand what the problem is. he needed to give enough info so that people could respond to his particular situation. for example, he probably wouldn't have gotten that anon reply if he had just put "how's SG's rep outside texas?"
some mad kids in this thread.

Scholly as #1 factor.
I could see people turning down HYS for huge money at CCN or maybe MBVP, but turning down Harvard for Texas?
Not criticizing... just shocked. Guess you really loved the school or had an incredibly compelling reason to take it.

it doesn't take much to figure out what sg's rep is
nor does it take much to figure out that your 2L summer job isn't gonna make or break you for clerkships if you have grades + LR + LOR + publications
there's so much transparent nonsense on these boards sometimes it amazes me
